3G will be switched off soon: act now to protect your essential services

As part of our ongoing network evolution, the Optus 3G network will be switched off from 28th October 2024. The bandwidth freed up by this move will be repurposed to boost the capacity, speed and reliability of our 4G network and help us roll out 5G to even more Australians.

The closure of 3G will affect how you access some essential services, depending on what mobile devices your organisation currently uses. This includes 3G mobile phones, mobile broadband, machine to machine and IoT devices, and/or EFTPOS terminals.

For example, if you are still using a 3G mobile phone, you may find yourself unable to:

  • Make calls
  • Send or receive messages
  • Make Triple Zero calls on the Optus network
  • Use data or connect to the internet.

What you need to do

We’ll be reaching out to affected enterprise and business customers, but if you have not yet received an email, SMS or letter from us with details, please reach out to your account manager or dedicated service desk contact.

Upgrading your devices

To ensure your mobile fleet still has access to essential services such as the internet and Triple Zero, we strongly recommend you upgrade your mobile devices as soon as possible.

We recommend you upgrade to a device that supports:

  • The 4G Network 700 MHz (LTE Band 28 or also known as the B28 spectrum)
  • 4G Voice over LTE (VoLTE), which is the technology that enables voice calls to be made over a 4G network, including emergency calling.
  • You may need to enable VoLTE in the device settings
  • Some recent 4G devices may also be impacted including models that were purchased overseas or imported and aren’t configured for Australian networks or do not support 4G VoLTE.

Learn more about why you need to turn VoTLE on your mobile devices in the video below or visit our support page here.
