After capturing the nation’s hearts and imagination during the recent Women’s World Cup, which saw strong viewing records and unprecedented interest in the women’s game, several Matildas squad members return to action this weekend for their respective teams in the Barclays Women’s Super League, which kicks off on 1 October – with every round live only on Optus Sport.

Aston Villa are taking on Manchester United in the first game of the new WSL season: Kick-off is 10:30pm Sunday AEDT (Australian Eastern Daylight Time).

Currently there are 10 members of the Matildas World Cup squad playing in the Barclays Women’s Super League:

  • Sam Kerr for Chelsea FC
  • Caitlin Foord, Steph Catley and Kyra Cooney-Cross for Arsenal FC
  • Teagan Micah for Liverpool FC
  • Mackenzie Arnold for West Ham United
  • Courtney Nevin for Leicester City
  • Clare Wheeler for Everton FC
  • Alanna Kennedy and Mary Fowler for Manchester City

All eyes will be on superstar Sam Kerr and her Chelsea team kicking off their title defence at home to London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, who Chelsea defeated home and away last season on their way to securing the title, pipping Manchester United by just two points.

As well as live coverage of every round in the Barclays Women’s Super League, Optus Sport customers can enjoy Mini Matches, previews, news stories, and dedicated new highlights show, Women’s Football Wrap, which will provide viewers with a weekly wrap-up that recaps the best of the action, reaction and results in women’s football.

Howard Rees, Head of Optus Sport, said, “Optus Sport is very proud of its long-standing support of women’s football and the record-breaking engagement we experienced during the recent Women’s World Cup cemented the Matildas’ status as box office superstar viewing.

“Now with many Matildas returning to domestic action in England, we’re expecting interest in women’s football to continue to rise throughout the Barclays Women’s Super League season with what promises to be the best season yet.”

Step Catley, Arsenal FC player and Optus ambassador, said, “Watching the nation get behind the Matildas during our run in the Women’s World Cup was incredible.

“When I was young, none of it was possible and now we’re seeing this generation of young girls and boys cheer on the team and that’s been so inspiring.

“Now fans across the country can get behind many of the superstars that lit up the Women’s World Cup in the new season of the Women’s Super League with every round live on Optus Sport.”
