It’s been a mixed bag for video games in 2024, with developers facing the difficult challenge of keeping gamers engaged in a competitive market. Some AAA games that were massive live-service IPs were marketed heavily by their studios but didn’t quite live up to the expectations on a market and gamer level, while indie platformers like ‘Animal Well’ gathered critical praise and performed admirably against the bigger titles.

It’s tough to say for sure, but here’s who we think will make the cut for this year’s GOTY.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth

PS5 (MA15+)

At the time of writing this, FF7 Rebirth looks to be out in front. It has a combined critic (Metacritic) score of 92 and is well regarded among the Final Fantasy community. The gameplay and visuals are stunning and is the perfect launch pad to dive into the world of Final Fantasy for newcomers.

Helldivers 2

PS5, PC (M)

One of the few live-service games (besides ‘Fortnite’) to seemingly get the model right: engaging gameplay that encourages multiple replays with friends. A surprise hit for 2024 and a welcome one, with a community that continues to grow in fandom.

Black Myth: Wukong

PS5, PC, Xbox Series X/S (M)

Based on Chinese Mythology, this runaway hit created quite a significant buzz around the gaming community with its impressive graphical fidelity and the shifting-stance style combat that felt unique to its world.

Astro Bot

PS5 (G)

There might be an outside chance that Team Asobi’s Astro Bot sneaks the win this year. Admittedly, they’re up against some pretty impressive competition but the joy of this game could shine through, with a Metacritic score of 94 and a very enthusiastic fanbase, they might just have enough to clinch the top spot but it’s a tall ask for such a small Bot.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom

Nintendo Switch (PG)

Despite not being as instantly eye-catching as its 3D counterparts, you can never discount Nintendo when they release a Zelda game as their track record stands for itself. These types of platformers have proven, if done well, to be quite successful dark horses for the race to win game of the year and the reviews for Echoes of Wisdom seem to point this way.

These are just a selection of the titles we consider to be game of the year, with some still to be released not taken into consideration yet.
