Get fired up for the FIFA Club World Cup on Optus Sport

It’s never too early in the year for a topflight football tournament. But can Bayern Munich meet (and beat) 2021’s big expectations?
Is there a hole in your heart, as big as a whale, for all those poor sporting comps that fell down a pandemic-shaped well in 2020?
The Olympics, The Australian Formula1 Grand Prix, Copa America and EURO 2020 were all put on the back burner until a later date or just cancelled outright, leaving the globe’s hopeless adrenaline junkies to get their fix from the less-than-exciting video game screen.
But now, thankfully, one of the best events on the holy football calendar has dodged and weaved its way around the restricted year, and is now locked, loaded, and ready to be fired face first from your favourite devices and into your ever-ready retinas.
Stream all the action of the 10-day, 2021 FIFA Club World Cup, on demand and exclusively live with the only app that’s worthy of housing the world’s best football - Optus Sport - from Friday 5 February 2021.
Let’s take a closer look at what’ll be delivered.
What’s the FIFA Club World Cup?
It’s just what it says on the tin. In the same way the FIFA World Cup is the football competition that pits nation against nation from all around the world, the Club World Cup is for the football clubs who’ve topped the world’s most formidable football leagues.
Those leagues include *deep breath* AFC Champions League (Asia), CAF Champions League (Africa), CONCACAF Champions League (North America), Copa Libertadores (South America), OFC Champions League (Oceania) and the UEFA Champions League.
Real Madrid hold the record for the most victories, and Liverpool took the title last year, because of course they did.
Big expectations on Bayern Munich
As the winners of last year’s UEFA Champions League, Bayern Munich are the favourites to take out this tourney as well. The well-oiled German machine has been firing on all cylinders of late, especially in this year’s UCL and their native league of Bundesliga, where they lead the table with a clear-cut 7-point lead ahead of RB Leipzig, the number 2 spot holders.
Can the lanky but deadly Robert Lewandowski and captain Manuel Neuer - AKA the Bayern Wall - maintain the momentum and taste global glory? Set up your stream to find out.
The rest of the contenders
But the road to cup won't be all beer and schnitzels - they’ll still need to survive the knock-out onslaught of the rest of the best in the world, including the K-League goliath Ulsan Hyundai, Egyptian immortals Al Ahly SC, local legends Al Duhail SC and the spicy but devastating Tigres UANL, the current kings of not just Mexico’s, but South and Central America’s fiercely competitive football leagues, too.
Anything can happen in a knockout tournament. Just look at last year’s UEFA Champions League, where Liverpool suffered a shock exit and Lionel Messi’s Barcelona went down 8-2 to Bayern Munich.
History’s honoured society
Much like winning a World Cup, winning a Club World Cup will sear your side into the list of history’s best clubs and players.
Over the years, the usual suspects of Manchester United, Barcelona, A.C. Milan, Inter Milan and Real Madrid have all claimed their slice of the glory pie, leaving Brazilian clubs like Corinthians, Sao Paolo and Internacional to keep the southern hemisphere represented in the winners’ circle.
Which club and country will claim victory this year?
Don’t miss 2021’s best 10 days
The world won’t stop turning, and the FIFA Club World Cup won’t wait for the next pandemic before it brings the best action to the world’s most ravenous fans.
