Yes, all Optus Flex Plus and Flex Plus Casual recharge options provide access to the 4G and 5G network (subject to speed caps on select plans). You’ll need a 5G compatible device to access 5G, which is only available in selected areas (exc. NT) – for coverage details see optus.com.au/coverage.
If you're a new or existing customer on the $39, $49 or $59 Flex Plus plan, you can access unlimited data every weekend. All new customers need to do is turn on AutoRecharge during SIM activation. Existing customers can turn on AutoRecharge in My Optus app to get access from the first eligible AutoRecharge. You can also access unlimited data weekends from your 2nd recharge on the $35 AutoRecharge only plan. If activation or AutoRecharge occur on the weekend, you won’t get access to Unlimited Data until the next following weekend day. For compatible devices only. Offer available until withdrawn. Excludes Traveller plans. Fair Go Policy applies.
Can I buy an Unlimited Data Day during an Unlimited Data Weekend?
Yes, you can still buy an Unlimited Data Day anytime. It’s a great option for weekdays or if you’re not eligible for unlimited weekend data (for example, because your plan is not eligible or because you don’t have AutoRecharge on). We don’t recommend that you buy an Unlimited Data Day on the weekend if you’re eligible for Unlimited Data weekends. There will be no benefit to you because you will already have access to unlimited data at uncapped speeds through our Unlimited Weekend Data offer. To learn more about Prepaid UDD and other add-ons, please see optus.com.au/prepaid/plans/add-ons.
Can I access an unlimited data weekend if my AutoRecharge is on a weekend?
An eligible AutoRecharge must have been processed by 11.59pm on Friday (local time) to receive access to unlimited data for the weekend that follows. If your first eligible AutoRecharge is applied on the Saturday you will get unlimited data on the Sunday only. If your AutoRecharge happens on a Sunday, you will not get the unlimited data weekend until the following weekend.
If you keep an eligible AutoRecharge turned on, unlimited data will continuously be applied to your service on the weekend (12.01am Sat to 11.59pm Sun).
An eSIM is an embedded SIM, where you can download a digital eSIM from Optus and connect without a physical SIM card.
What are the advantages of eSIM?
This technology is embedded directly into your device, offering several advantages.
- Connect to Optus faster: Don't wait for fiddly, physical SIM cards to arrive. eSIM technology is already built into your compatible device, for quicker, simpler connection to our best mobile network ever.
- Easier digital setup: With an eSIM you can activate our great value plans, easily through My Optus app, simply by downloading your digital eSIM. Make changes or add another service with less wait time. You'll need an internet connection (via WiFi or hotspot from another device) to download the app.
- Two numbers. One phone: Enjoy the flexibility of having two numbers on the same phone – one for work and one for personal use – simply by using both an eSIM and a physical SIM*.
- More environmentally friendly: Because there's less reliance on plastic SIM cards, there's also less manufacturing and less packaging. That all means a lower impact on the environment.
*In some 5G capable phones, you won’t be able to access the Optus 5G network if you have an eSIMand a physical SIM active at the same time. Find more information and a list of affected phones here.
Buying a prepaid eSIM is simple with these steps:
- Check Device Compatibility: Before purchasing, ensure your device supports eSIM technology. You can check this by selecting your device brand in the appropriate dropdown menu on our website or app.
- Install the App: Download the My Optus App from the App Store or Google Play. Note that eSIM purchases can only be made through this app. You'll need an internet connection (via WiFi or hotspot from another device) to download the app
- Purchase eSIM: Once the app is installed, return to the eSIM section on web and click on "Buy eSIM Prepaid" to proceed with your purchase. This will open up in your My Optus App.
We're switching off our 3G network from 28 October 2024, which means 3G services will no longer be available on the Optus network. Regardless of the SIM plan you have purchased, if your device relies on 3G for voice or data use, your service will be impacted from this date. This includes the inability to:
- Make calls
- Send or receive messages
- Make emergency calls to Triple Zero (000)
- Use data or connect to the internet
If your device is impacted you will need to get a new device that's compatible with the Optus 4G/5G networks to stay connected and continue to use your SIM. The easiest way to check if your device is 4G/5G compatible is by having a look at your device specifications in the user manual, or refer to the manufacturer’s website.
Here’s what you need to check to confirm if your device is compatible:
- If your device is compatible with the 4G Network 700 MHz (LTE Band 28 or also known as B28 spectrum)
- If your device supports 4G VoLTE (which enables voice calls to be made over a 4G network) - including VoLTE emergency calling
If your device does not support one or more of the above, it will no longer work or will have significantly reduced coverage once the 3G network is switched off.
Important - In addition to 3G devices, some recent 4G devices may also be impacted including models that may have been purchased overseas or imported which aren’t configured for Australian networks or do not support 4G VoLTE.
Click here to see some of the devices impacted by this change. Please note this is not a complete list of impacted devices as there are thousands of different devices, models and variants (including devices not sold by Optus).
If you are concerned your device is impacted you can find additional information on our 3G Changes Help & Support Page.
Our network speed caps are great for day to day usage of your mobile devices including video streaming, video calling, web browsing, social media, email and messaging. If you are downloading or transferring large files (such as movie or gaming files), it may take longer than it would at uncapped speeds. It’s important to note that the speed cap is the maximum speed you may get access to. Your actual network speed may be slower and will vary depending on various factors including your device, location and source of download.
What is AutoRecharge for Optus Flex Plus?
AutoRecharge is the simple solution for automatically recharging your Optus Flex Plus plan on a regular cycle (on the day of expiry) or when you run low on data. Set and forget with AutoRecharge.
How can I set up my AutoRecharge?

- If AutoRecharge is not set up at the time of activation you can set this up at any time via My Optus app.
- You can also turn on AutoRecharge by SMS (Text ‘Menu’ to 9999) if you have a saved payment method.
Can I cancel my AutoRecharge anytime?
- Yes, you can cancel your AutoRecharge anytime and once your current recharge expires you will no longer be charged. Cancelling your AutoRecharge also means you will no longer be able to use data, make calls or send texts when your current recharge expires unless you recharge manually.
- If you are on the $35 Optus Flex Plus plan and AutoRecharge is cancelled you will need to choose from other available plans when your current recharge expires and the $35 plan option will no longer be available.

Plus customers can get a $4 discount with AutoRecharge on the $39, $49 and $59 plans. Activation bonus data: Additional data will be provided on first three recharges to new services only. Reverts to standard data inclusion after 3rd recharge: 3GB for $12, 20GB for $35, 30GB for $45, 40GB for $55, 80GB for $160, 200GB for $320 (or as otherwise notified). Excludes rate plan changes and SIM swaps. First three recharges must be within 3 years of activation. On 10 Oct 24, the activation data for the $160 recharge increased from 40GB to 50GB. For activations on this plan prior to 10 Oct 24, the activation data will be 40GB for first three recharges, even if the second and/or third recharges occur after 10 Oct 24.
Recharge expiry: Your recharge will expire in the time frames specified above, or on your next recharge (whichever is earlier). If you recharge before expiry, any unused days or inclusions not eligible for rollover will be forfeited.
Coverage: All Optus Flex Plus plans include access to the Optus 4G and 5G Networks (subject to availability and speed caps). 5G available in selected areas (excluding NT). 5G compatible phone and coverage required to access 5G. Coverage varies depending on your device and location. Check coverage at optus.com.au/coverage.
Speed caps: Optus Flex Plus plans are speed capped, which means your network speed is capped to a maximum potential speed of 250Mbps on the $55 recharge option and 150Mbps on all other recharge options. These speeds are the maximum potential speeds that you may get access to. The actual network speed you experience may be slower and will vary depending on various factors including your device, location, available bandwidth and source of download. To access uncapped speeds for a day, you can purchase the Unlimited Data Day Add On.
AutoRecharge (frequency): If you choose to turn AutoRecharge on, we will automatically deduct the recharge amount from your saved payment method on the day of recharge expiry (any time from 5.30am on that day). Your service will then automatically recharge between 11pm and 11.30pm (Sydney time) on the day of recharge expiry. If you cancel AutoRecharge after you have been charged, but before midnight on the day of recharge expiry, we will refund you within 2-10 business days depending on your payment method. You can change, set up and turn off your AutoRecharge through My Optus app, or by phone (call 555) or SMS (Text ‘Menu’ to 9999) if you have a saved payment method.
AutoRecharge (low balance): Low balance AutoRecharge will turn on by default when you turn on AutoRecharge. If your data balance is reduced to 200MB before your next scheduled AutoRecharge, we will automatically recharge your account (limited to once per day). This will reset your inclusions and start a new recharge expiry period. You must have frequency AutoRecharge turned on to enable low balance AutoRecharge. You can manage your settings in My Optus app. From 28/4/25, low balance AutoRecharge will be included as standard when you have AutoRecharge turned on and you won’t be able to turn it off unless you also turn off frequency AutoRecharge (ie, having AutoRecharge turned on means you will AutoRecharge upon expiry or when your data balance is reduced to 200MB (whichever comes first).
Add Ons: You must be within an active recharge period to purchase Add Ons. Add Ons are used before the same inclusion type included with your standard recharge (e.g. a $10/5GB MyData Add On will be used before any remaining data in your standard recharge inclusions). If you recharge with the same Add On before your current Add On expires, your inclusions will roll over (excludes Unlimited Data Day, Optus Sport and $5 International Talk). Further T&Cs apply to each specific Add On see Add On page for details.
International Talk: Minutes to standard international numbers in Zone 1 and Zone 2 countries are included on all recharges valued at $35 or more. Eligible Zone 1 and Zone 2 countries are subject to change, see current list at https://www.optus.com.au/prepaid/plans/international-call-rates. Minutes are counted in per minute increments. Any usage beyond included value requires purchase of an add-on. Excludes non-standard international calls (premium, special, satellite, overseas toll-free numbers and video calls).
International SMS: Each recharge includes 50 standard SMS (160 characters per SMS) from Australia to any international country. Excludes non-standard SMS and MMS. Available to existing customers from first recharge following 10 October 2024.
