What we’re watching in August 2026

Now that we’re officially halfway through the year, it’s about that time where we reflect on the last six months and think about the things we achieved or missed out on.

Most people will try and recount their New Year’s resolutions but here at Well Connected, we’re reminiscing on the movies and TV shows we have banked away in our “will watch later” list that still need to be ticked off.

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender (Paramount+ PG-13) July 25

Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender came to Paramount+ near the end of July, and I couldn't be more thrilled – I've been waiting years for more Avatar, having been a fan of the original Nickelodeon anime and its sequel series Avatar: The Legend of Korra.

This movie takes place thirteen years after the Hundred Year War, the war that ended with the finale of Avatar: The Last Airbender. The world is rebuilding and benders are learning once again to live harmoniously, with the establishment of Republic City as a home for all nations.

Now, obviously I don't want to give too much away with the plot – but know that a lot of the movie hinges on learning ancient powers, obtaining legendary artefacts, and Aang attempting to save his Airbender culture from extinction. The original 'Gaang' (Aang, Sokka, Toph, Zuko and Katara) all return for this globetrotting adventure.

Jurassic Park (BINGE PG-13)

It would be incredibly remiss of us to not remember and acknowledge the astounding career of the late great Sam Neill.

From theatre productions to television shows and many many many blockbuster films, his contribution to the entertainment world will certainly be missed. Spanning a career of over five decades, Sam Neill has brought so many cinematic gems into our lives, including my personal favourite (and undoubtedly a repeat for many others as well) was 1993’s Jurassic Park.

In this Oscar winning film, Sam stars as palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant alongside Laura Dern and Jeff Goldblum who are all guests of a rich industrialist invited to tour or rather test run his latest business venture – a theme park filled with genetically engineered dinosaurs.

After an unexpected power failure, their visit takes a deadly turn when the power outage also disables the park’s security measures, allowing the once contained cloned dinosaurs to now run free and go on the hunt - revealing the true dangers of tampering with nature.

Masters of the Universe, (Amazon Prime PG-13) July 22

If you were a kid in the early eighties, there’s every chance that you were, like me, obsessed by the cutting edge, culturally iconic cartoon of the times He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.

All the action happens on Eternia, a magical, mythical planet where our hero Prince Adam occasionally holds aloft the Sword of Power and shouts, "By the Power of Grayskull! I have the power!". After that Adam becomes endowed with fabulous secret powers and turns into He-Man, the most powerful man in the universe. Together with his transformative mates Battle Cat (the alter-ego of Adam's cowardly pet tiger, Cringer), The Sorceress, Teela, Man-At-Arms and Orko, He-Man defends Eternia from the evil forces of bony-faced baddie Skeletor, who of course wants to mess things up for everyone.

If you didn’t see any of the 65 original animated episodes there’s no need for FOMO, because now on Prime you can experience the latest live-action take of this superb shape-shifting saga, with a masterful cast including Nicholas Galitzine as our muscle-bound hunky hero, Jarod Leto as the despicable Skelator, Camila Mendes as the protector-teacher, Teela, and Sir Idris Elba as Duncan (a.k.a. Man at Arms).

So sit back, relax and enjoy this 2 hour 20 minute sword swinging extravaganza. And remember, “legends aren’t born, they’re forged.”

The Whisper Man, (Netflix R 18+) August 28

Let’s take a moment to celebrate modern security door cameras.

Think that’s a cringe thing to do? Then go ahead and stream The Whisper Man and feel free to join our applause once the credits roll.

Based on the New York Times best-selling novel by Alex North, this Netflix adaptation follows Tom Kennedy (Adam Scott) and his young son Jake as they relocate to the quiet town of Featherbank in the hopes to start a new chapter after the devastating loss of their matriarch.

When Jake mysteriously vanishes from his own house, rumours that an old serial killer only known as The Whisper Man has returned to town begin to circulate – only this time, small town talk suspects that this serial killer may have an accomplice. Desperate to find his son, Kennedy reunites with his estranged father, a retired former police detective to uncover the truth of why The Whisper Man has suddenly returned.

This thriller also stars Robert DeNiro and Michelle Monaghan and will more than likely have you on the edge of your seat with one eye locked onto the television screen and the other monitoring where all your loved ones are.

What else is streaming in August?

While the above shows what we’re most excited for, there’s a lot of other content that we’re also keen on streaming.

If you’re looking for something a little closer to home, head over to BINGE and stream Colin from Accounts where the final season has just premiered on July 27. In this BINGE original scripted series set in Australia, the latest season picks up right where things were left off where we follow the aftermath of Gordon’s ill-fated proposal.

Another homegrown show that you can never go wrong with is, The Great Australian Bake Off on BINGE. Whether you’re attentively watching, intrigued by baking or simply just need a casual viewing – this light-hearted series will work in all favours.

Alternatively head over to Netflix and watch some original content with The Last House starring Greta Lee and Wagner Moura or the adapt to screen movie My Brilliant Career starring Australia’s very own Philippa Northeast and Christopher Chung.
