What NBN Speed Changes Mean for You — And How We're Making It Easier to Get More from Your Connection

Originally published 7 July 2025, revised 11 August 2025.
From work, to learning, staying connected and running our homes - we live our lives online. In a world that never truly switches off, a strong internet connection doesn’t just support modern life - it powers it.
Over the coming months, the nbn™ (National Broadband Network) is rolling out a series of speed changes for three of their fastest speed products, and Optus will automatically enable these upgrades across eligible plans at no extra cost to our customers. We’re also embracing these changes as an opportunity to simplify our offering, giving customers clearer choices to fit their needs.
Faster speeds, simpler choices
One of the biggest benefits of the nbn update will be the faster speeds for eligible plans. The arrival of nbn's speed changes from September, will offer even faster performance for streaming, gaming, remote work and everything in between, for a price that won’t break the budget.
To help customers navigate these changes, we’ve simplified our nbn plan structure - moving from nine to four core options, making it’s easier to choose a plan that suits your household needs.
Check your connection
Faster speeds aren’t just about the plan you’re on; they also depend on the type of nbn connection available at your address. Customers on Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) or Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) connections can typically access the highest speeds, with Typical Evening Speeds of up to 780/40Mbps on Optus’s fastest nbn plan (Ultrafast). If you have one of these connections and are currently on an Optus plan which includes the Fast, Superfast or Ultrafast speed, there’s no need to do anything, we will begin automatically upgrading from September. If you're currently on Fibre to the Node (FTTN), Fibre to the Building (FTTB) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), you may be eligible for a $0 upgrade to FTTP under the nbn fibre upgrade program.
We’ll help guide you through the upgrade process if you're eligible, so you can unlock the benefits of faster speeds with minimal disruption. Simply check your address on our website or speak to our team, upgrading could mean access to more speed options, especially in internet-heavy households.
| Speeds | Basic Speed | Standard Speed | Home Fast Speed | Home Superfast Speed | Home Ultrafast Speed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Current nbn Wholesale Access Speeds (Mbps) | 25/10 Mbps (nbn Home Basic II) | 50/20 Mbps (nbn Home Standard) | 100/20 Mbps (nbn Home Fast I) | 250/25 Mbps (nbn Home Superfast) | 1000/50 Mbps (nbn Home Unlimited) |
| Current nbn Typical Busy Period Speeds (Mbps) (7-11pm) | 25/8 Mbps | 50/18 Mbps | 100/18 Mbps | 250/22 Mbps | 800/40 Mbps |
| New nbn Wholesale Access Speeds (Mbps) | No Change | No Change | 500/50 Mbps (nbn Home Fast II) | 750/50 Mbps (nbn Home Superfast) | 1000/100 Mbps (nbn Home Ultrafast) |
| New nbnTypical Busy Period Speeds (Mbps) (7-11pm) | No Change | No Change | 500/43 Mbps | 680/43 Mbps | 800/80 Mbps |
Typical Busy Period Speeds: The Typical Busy Period Speeds advertised for the new nbn speed tiers are our best estimate, based on the available speed data. This is not based on the speeds observed for a representative sample (with the exception of the Ultrafast download speed which is not changing). Once more data is available, the Typical Busy Period Speeds for the new nbn speed tiers will be updated accordingly.
What speeds should I expect from the nbn’s wholesale speed upgrade?
- The “nbn Home Fast” tier access speeds will increase from 100/20 Mbps to 500/50 Mbps
- The “nbn Home Superfast” tier access speeds will increase from 250/25 Mbps to 750/50 Mbps
- The “nbn Home Ultrafast” tier access speeds will increase from 1000/50 Mbps to 1000/100 Mbps
Now, it’s important to understand that nbn’s wholesale access speed is the speed sold to internet providers like Optus. But the actual speed you get at home can be a little lower, depending on factors like your modem and your home setup. Your current modem should be good to go but if this isn’t the case don’t worry! We’ll reach out and let you know if an upgrade is needed to get the best performance.
More flexibility, more value
We’re also refreshing the way we support customers across every part of their experience:
- BYO modem or Wi-Fi 6 at no extra cost: BYO modem and go month-to-month or enjoy the high-performance of our Wi-Fi 6 modem at no extra cost when you stay with an eligible plan for 24 months.*
- Bundle and save: Customers who add nbn with a new or existing eligible postpaid mobile and/or connected devices plan can continue to unlock an exclusive $15 a month Bundle Bonus for 12-months. Find out more here.
- Content your way: On our Promo and Ultrafast plans, we're introducing a monthly content credit, so you can choose up to $20 per month off your favourite streaming subscriptions via SubHub.
