nbn® speed upgrade: Info you need to know

Australia’s nbn® broadband network will get an exciting speed upgrade beginning from September 2025 that will enhance how many of us are able to connect, work and play online, with faster connections prepared for the future. 

• nbn speed upgrade beginning from September 2025 on eligible Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre-Coaxial (HFC) plans, at no extra cost. 
    
• You don’t need to do anything now - we'll publish more information soon. 
  
  
• Optus modems are recommended to enjoy the optimal online experience, we'll let you know if you need to upgrade yours. 
  
  
• See below if your current nbn plan is eligible for the speed increase and consider switching now if it’s not.

The nbn speed upgrade aims to give more households and businesses access to higher-speed plans, and ensure the network is prepared to meet future needs – so you can look forward to doing more, faster, whatever you need from the internet.  

Put simply, it’s about internet that’s ready for what’s next. 

What’s changing with nbn® wholesale access speeds? 

• nbn will be increasing the wholesale access speed on their FTTP and HFC connections for three of their fastest speed products, nbn “Home Fast”, “Home Superfast”, and “Home Ultrafast”. 
  
  
• Internet service providers like Optus will increase the speeds of their eligible plans at no extra cost. 
  

Which Optus nbn plans will be eligible? 

• Plans connected via nbn FTTP and HFC with Fast, Superfast, and Ultrafast speeds or equivalent speed pack add-ons. 
  
  
• You can check the speed included with your Optus plan in My Optus App or your Customer Information Summary. 
  

Note: Customers connected via nbn Fibre to the Building (FTTB), Fibre to the Curb (FTTC), or Fibre to the Node (FTTN) are not eligible for the nbn upgrade. 

Note: Plans and Speed Pack Add-ons which include nbn 100/40 speed (Premium Upload/Speed Pack 4) are not eligible for the nbn speed upgrade. This wholesale access speed is not being upgraded by nbn. 

What speeds should I expect from the upgrade? 

• nbn Home Fast wholesale access speeds will increase from 100/20 Mbps to 500/50 Mbps. 
  
  
• nbn Home Superfast wholesale access speeds will increase from 250/25 Mbps to 750/50 Mbps. 
  
  
• nbn Home Ultrafast wholesale access speed will increase from 1000/50 Mbps to 1000/100 Mbps.

What does it mean for our nbn® customers? 

• The speed upgrade will be enabled across eligible plans beginning from September 2025 at no extra cost to both new and existing Optus customers. 
  
  
• If you’re on an eligible plan already, you’ll automatically benefit from the new higher speeds when they are introduced by Optus. 
  
  
• If you’re not on an eligible plan, there will be no change to your service. This includes customers on Fast plans or higher connected via nbn’s FTTB, FTTC, and FTTN. 
  

Note: Customers on nbn’s FTTB, FTTC and FTTN connections may still be able to access the benefits of the increased speeds by getting a $0 upgrade to FTTP and upgrading to an eligible plan. Check if you're eligible here.  

No, the nbn speed upgrade will be automatically introduced across eligible plans on FTTP or HFC connections beginning from September 2025 at no extra cost. 

If you have an Optus supplied modem with your internet plan, we’ll let you know if your modem is able to support the benefits of the nbn speed upgrade. If your modem is not supplied by Optus, you’ll need to make sure the modem can handle the higher speeds. Typically modems with Wi-Fi 5 capability are suitable for Fast plans or lower,  Wi-Fi 6 is recommended for the new faster speeds. 

If you haven’t updated your modem in the last five years, to make sure you’re ready to access the full benefits of the speed upgrade, we recommend upgrading to an Optus Ultra WiFi Modem with your nbn plan – you get our powerful modem at no extra cost if you stay connected for 24 months. 

Business customers with nbn plans or speed packs that include nbn Home Fast, Home Superfast and Home Ultrafast will be eligible for the nbn speed upgrade. 

Business customers on Business Essential, Business Pro, Business Elite, and Business Ultimate speeds or equivalent speed pack add-ons are not eligible for the speed upgrade. nbn is not upgrading these wholesale access speeds.
