How to activate a new or replacement SIM card

Have you just purchased a new SIM card? Need to replace your lost or damaged SIM card?

In this article we'll explain how to activate your new or replacement SIM card.

Postpaid physical SIM cards

I've purchased my SIM online or over the phone:

  • Your SIM card will automatically activate within 4 hours of receiving it
  • If your SIM hasn't automatically activated, contact us

eSIM
  • See instructions on how to activate your eSIM here

Prepaid physical SIM cards
  • Click here to activate your Prepaid SIM card online
  • If you're activating a SIM on to an Optus Flex Plus plan you can also do this via My Optus app
  • You'll need your SIM card number and valid ID
  • If you're unable to activate your Prepaid SIM card online, contact us or visit your nearest Optus store
Note. If you visit a store, make sure to bring 100 points of ID.

How do I know when my SIM is active?

You'll see Optus next to the coverage bars at the top of your home/lock screen.

How do I order a replacement eSIM / Physical SIM?

You can order a replacement eSIM / Physical SIM by visiting your nearest Optus store or contacting us.

If you visit a store, make sure to bring 100 points of ID.

Note. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can also transfer to an eSIM or perform an eSIM replacement via My Optus app. For details, see A guide to eSIM.

I ordered a replacement physical SIM card in-store
  • Your SIM card will be activated in-store
  • If your SIM card isn't active, please call us

I ordered a replacement physical SIM card over the phone
  1. To activate your replacement SIM card:
    • Give us a call; or
    • Visit your nearest Optus store with 100 points of ID
  2. Insert your replacement SIM card into your device
  3. To check whether your SIM card is active look for Optus next to the coverage bars at the top of your home / lock screen

It can take between 15mins and 4 hours for a SIM to activate. If it's still not active, try these steps:

  1. Periodically turn your device off and on
  2. Remove and re-insert the SIM card to make sure it's seated correctly
  3. Sync your device with any companion software/cloud service it may have. See Device Guides for help

If you've ported your number across to Optus from another service provider outside of the below business hours, your old service will remain active with your existing provider until the next porting day:

  • Monday to Friday, 8am - 8pm AEST
  • Saturday, 10am - 6pm AEST (except national public holidays)

FAQs

There's three types of physical SIM cards available. When you purchase a SIM card from Optus you'll receive a 3-in-1 SIM card containing all three types of SIM cards:

  • Nano
  • Micro
  • Standard

eSIM is also available in some devices.

To determine which type of SIM card your device needs:

  1. Open Device Guides
  2. Search your device
  3. Click the specs tab

Note: Ensure you select the correct SIM card for your device:

  • Mobile phone SIMs are not interchangeable with Tablets/Mobile Broadband devices
  • You cannot replace your Prepaid SIM with a postpaid SIM card (or vice versa)

You can find step-by-step instructions on how to insert your SIM card in our Device Guides.

  1. Search your device
  2. Click Getting started
  3. Select Insert SIM
  4. Follow the instructions

If you order a replacement SIM card you'll keep the same phone number.

If your contacts are only saved to your SIM card, unfortunately they'll be lost if your SIM card is lost or stolen.

If you have saved your contacts to your device, or backed them up elsewhere, you'll still have access to them when you replace your SIM card.

Once your SIM is activated, you might consider changing your SIM card PIN to help protect against unauthorised use.

Read more about changing your SIM card PIN here.

eSIM is available for compatible mobile devices.
