5G v 4G: What's the difference?

What's the difference between 5G, 4G and 3G?
The 'G' in 3G, 4G and 5G stands for 'generation'. Each network generation is established by a set of standards. 5G is the fifth generation of mobile technology.
4G introduced faster internet speeds, HD TV on mobile and higher quality video calls. When the 5G network reaches maturity, it will introduce three key benefits:
- Faster speeds: As the network evolves, Optus 5G will bring faster speeds, meaning downloading movies, games and other large files may take seconds, rather than minutes.
- Bandwidth: The greater bandwidth of 5G networks will allow more devices to be connected at the same time.
- Near real time connections: In the future, 5G will allow near instant response times between devices, allowing for better online gaming, advancements in virtual reality and much more.
Note: 5G is currently only available for data use. When you make a call on your 5G capable device, you'll revert to the 4G network.
What does 5G mean for the 4G network?
5G will not replace the 4G network. The two networks will work together.
The Optus 5G mobile network is currently available within selected Australian suburbs. Outside of 5G coverage areas, 5G capable devices will switch to the Optus 4G network.
What about the 3G network?
The Optus 3G network shut down in October 2024 alongside the other 3G networks in Australia.
What is 5G Standalone?
Unlike 5G non-standalone connections, 5G Standalone (SA) connections do not need to establish a 4G connection prior to connecting to 5G. 5G SA allows devices to connect to the 5G network immediately providing users with an elevated 5G experience.
Are all Optus Home Modems 5G SA capable?
Currently the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Modem is the only modem in the Optus range of modems that is 5G Standalone compatible - for new and recontracting customers who sign up to an eligible plan with the Optus Ultra WiFi 5G Modem from 26 August 2024. All other existing customers using an Optus Ultra WiFi 5G modem on eligible plans will gain access to 5G SA at a later date, with release timing to be confirmed.
Previous versions of our 5G Modems are unfortunately not equipped to accommodate 5G Standalone connectivity.

- Lower latency - meaning faster internet response times
- Improved serviceability - we'll be able to deliver more 5G Internet services to more homes & businesses.
