LTE (Long Term Evolution) is the 'fourth generation' of mobile technology used to provide 4G services. The Optus 4G Plus network uses three types of LTE technology, FD-LTE, TD-LTE and LTE-A.

FD LTE is a type of 4G technology used by the Optus 4G Plus network. FD-LTE technology uses two separate frequency channels (one channel for data download and one channel for data upload).
TD LTE is a type of 4G technology used by the Optus 4G Plus network. The upload and download of data occur on the same frequency bands but at different times.
LTE-A is the next generation of 4G technology used by the Optus 4G Plus network. LTE-A improves your 4G experience by bringing new features like Carrier Aggregation.
What is Carrier Aggregation?
Put simply, Carrier Aggregation improves network speeds by combining a number of frequency bands to make the ‘network pipe bigger’. This means you can go even faster on the Optus 4G Plus network.
LTE Advanced won’t kick in all the time as the Optus 4G Plus network is already super fast, instead LTE Advanced will give an extra speed boost when downloading very large files or HD videos. We are planning on rolling out more LTE Advanced features in the future.
What frequencies does Optus use for LTE Advanced?
Carrier Aggregation (2x channel) on the Optus 4G Plus network requires a compatible category 6 device. This technology uses several combinations of 4G spectrum bands,
- Selected capital cities: We combine our 2300MHz spectrum
- Some capital cities / major metropolitan areas: We also use 700MHz & 1800MHz
- Major regional town centres: We use 700 MHz & 2600MHz
Carrier Aggregation (3x channel) on the Optus 4G Plus network is available in selected parts of Newcastle / Melbourne CBD and requires a compatible category 9 device. This technology uses a unique combination of,
- 20+20MHz of 2300 MHz
- 15MHz of 1800 MHz spectrum
