What is Optus Upgrade and Protect?

Optus Upgrade and Protect banner

Optus Upgrade and Protect is a service that eligible customers may acquire for a monthly recurring subscription fee ($15 incl. GST) when purchasing an eligible device on a device payment plan (OptusPay).

Optus Upgrade and Protect gives you the flexibility to upgrade your mobile phone or tablet device during your device payment plan:

  • You can take up Optus Upgrade and Protect at the time of purchasing an eligible mobile phone / tablet with Optus or within 30 days of starting your device payment plan by contacting us
  • You must select to pay for your mobile phone / tablet through a 12, 24 or 36 month device payment plan (OptusPay)
  • Optus Upgrade and Protect isn't an insurance product
  • Eligibility rules apply. For more, see Eligibility below
  • Terms and conditions apply
  • When you upgrade, you must return your existing mobile phone / tablet
  • For information on assessment of the returned device, possible additional fees and other key information, see Points to Note below

    • You can upgrade your mobile phone / tablet multiple times while on your device payment plan, however not during the first 30 days of your eligible device payment plan term and no more than once every 30 calendar days
    • When you upgrade, you must return your existing mobile phone / tablet and purchase a new eligible device on a 12, 24 or 36 month device payment plan (subject to Optus' usual processes including credit assessment)
    • An assessment of the existing mobile phone / tablet will be performed to determine the condition of your device
    • Depending on the device assessment and the length of time you've spent on your current device payment plan, an upgrade or damage fee may apply. See the Device assessment table below
    • An estimate of the fee payable will be provided when you redeem your upgrade, but the final fee will be determined after a physical examination of your device
    • Any additional fees will be charged to your next invoice / bill (e.g. early upgrade or damage fees)
    • Optus Upgrade and Protect will automatically stop when the phone / tablet repayments are complete

What's the difference between Optus Upgrade and Protect and Device Protect?

Device Protect is a legacy insurance product that is not available for new sales. Optus Upgrade and Protect is a device upgrade and protection service that allows customers the flexibility to return and upgrade their mobile or tablet in any condition at a time that suits them (except in first 30 days of their device payment term). Optus Upgrade and Protect is not an insurance product and does not cover devices that are lost or stolen.

Can I purchase Optus Upgrade and Protect if I already have a device?

Optus Upgrade and Protect can be added when you first take up an eligible device payment plan with OptusPay and an eligible SIM plan. You can also contact us within 30 days of starting your device payment plan to add Optus Upgrade and Protect.

How do I pay for Optus Upgrade and Protect?

You will be charged the monthly recurring subscription fee via credit, debit or charge card (for Mobile Automatic Payment plans) or via your Optus bill using your nominated payment method for Choice and My Plan Plus customers. You'll be able to manage your payment method and view your upcoming and past payments via MyAccount or My Optus app.

How do I redeem Optus Upgrade and Protect?

Visit an Optus retail store or contact us where you'll be required to complete a device assessment. Based on the length of time you've spent on your current OptusPay device payment plan and the condition of your existing device, fees may apply to redeem. Follow Optus' instructions to return your existing device - failure to do so will result in non-return fees being charged.

What happens to my old device?

Devices returned as part of Optus Upgrade and Protect are securely cleansed of all data and re-purposed by our second-hand device vendor or recycled to put the materials to another use.
