WiFi connectivity & troubleshooting
To get the fastest, most reliable internet connection in your home or office, a wired connection (via Ethernet cable) is the way to go. However, we know that running cables throughout your property is not always possible, which is where the flexibility of WiFi comes in handy.
This flexibility does come with some trade-offs however, and understanding how to minimise these, coupled with good modem placement, can help you to get the most out of your WiFi network.
- Obstacles - Brick walls, fish tanks & metal fencing (for example) can reduce or block WiFi signals
- Distance - WiFi signals weaken the further they need to travel. Solutions can include using WiFi range extenders.
- Device interference - Microwave ovens, wireless doorbells, cordless phones and some Bluetooth devices can interfere with WiFi frequencies (typically 2.4 GHz / 5 GHz). Avoid this by trying an alternate frequency. eg. switch your modem to transmit on 5 GHz or vice versa.
- Other WiFi interference - WiFi networks can interfere with each other. To separate yours from your neighbour's (for example) try using a different WiFi channel.
