Identify hoaxes, phishing or online scams

Online hoaxes or scams usually involve some form of 'phishing'.

What is phishing?

Phishing can be described as a fraudulent attempt to capture private or sensitive information by pretending to be a legitimate entity. Financial and / or identity theft is usually the result of this malicious practice.

Methods used to phish can include text messages, phone calls, emails and / or fake websites; all of which are designed to trick you into revealing private information.

How to identify phishing

Not all phishing attempts are easy to identify, but signs can include;

  • The use of generic greetings
  • Poor grammar, spelling or layout
  • An ‘urgent’ request for personal / sensitive information
  • Misleading links, sender addresses & fake attachments

If you suspect a phishing scam, never supply private / sensitive information. Instead, contact the 'supposed' entity via a different method such as an independent internet search, a previous bill, etc. Do not use the contact details they have provided.

Important: Keep in mind that Optus never requests personal or sensitive information via email / text and will request a call-in if required. For more information on phishing, visit the ACMA website or see Reporting hoaxes, phishing or scams.
