How to use your phone while overseas

In this article we'll show you how to use your Optus number while overseas.

Sending messages or making calls

When sending a message or making a call to a number outside the country you're in, you'll need to add a + and the country code.

For example, if you're trying to call Australia, you'll need to add +61 to the phone number. If you're calling a mobile, remember to remove the 0 from the front of the number.

See example:

04XX XXX XXX = +614XX XXX XXX
02 99XX XXXX = +612 99XX XXXX

Don't forget to change the area code (02) depending on the state or territory you're calling. Note: your phone may automatically correct this for you. Get more information on country codes here.

Receiving messages or calls

See below for information on receiving messages and calls:

From a number in Australia: the caller only needs to dial your number as if you were still in Australia (e.g. 04XX XXX XXX)
From a number anywhere else (including the overseas destination you're in): the caller must enter your number using the full international format (e.g. +61 4XX XXX XXX)
