Optus International Roaming explained

In this article we'll explain what international roaming is and the options for using your Optus number overseas.

International roaming is the ability to use your number outside of Australia.

Roaming options will vary depending on your plan and where you're travelling to.

You can check your plan via My Optus app. For help, see View your plan details.

To see if roaming is available in your destination

  • Postpaid Mobile rates & eligibility
  • Prepaid Mobile rates & eligibility

Note. In addition to activating roaming on your number, ensure data roaming is turned on in your device settings.

View the relevant option below:

If you're on an Optus Choice Plus, Optus Plus Family, Optus Plus Promo, Optus Choice Plus Data, Optus Plus Kids, Business Choice Plus, Business Choice Data Plus, Business Teams Plus or Qantas plan, you're eligible to use Optus Daily Roaming. Download a full list of eligible plans here.

Optus Daily roaming is auto-activated, so if you don't turn it off, it'll automatically trigger when you start using your Mobile service in an eligible destination. No roaming options are available on these plans outside Zone 1 destinations.

You'll have 5GB of data and unlimited standard talk and text (Mobile Phone plans only, Fair Go Policy applies) to use every 24 hours for $5 per 24 hours / 5GB of data.

After the 24 hours ends or if you use the 5GB of data, if you continue using your services, we'll automatically add another Optus Daily Roaming $5 charge.

Note: Talk and text aren't available for Mobile Broadband services. These services will have 5GB of data to use per $5 charge.

For more information, see Optus Daily Roaming explained.

If you're on a Business Choice, Business Choice Data, Business Teams, Business Fund, or Business SIM plan (excl. $39 Business SIM), you're eligible to use Optus Business $5 Roaming Pass. Download a full list of eligible plans here.

Optus Business $5 Roaming Pass is auto-activated, so if you don't turn it off, it'll automatically trigger when you start using your Mobile service in an eligible Zone 1 destination. Standard roaming rates apply in all other destinations.

You'll have 5GB of data and unlimited standard talk and text (Mobile Phone plans only, Fair Go Policy applies) to use every 24 hours for $5 per 24 hours / 5GB of data.

After the 24 hours ends or if you use the 5GB of data, if you continue using your service, we'll automatically add another Optus Business $5 Roaming Pass charge.

Note: Talk and text aren't available for Mobile Broadband services. These services will have 5GB of data to use per $5 charge.

For more information, see Optus Business $5 Roaming Pass.

I have a roaming inclusion in my plan:

  • If your roaming plan inclusion expires within 30 days and you're still using your service overseas, you'll automatically trigger Optus Daily Roaming

I don't have a roaming inclusion in my plan:

  • You'll automatically trigger Optus Daily Roaming when you use your service in an eligible Zone 1 destination. See Optus Daily Roaming
  • No roaming options are available on these plans outside Zone 1 destinations

If you're not on an Optus Plus or Qantas plan, you can use your plan's roaming inclusion (if applicable), Optus $10 Roaming Pass and / or standard roaming rates, depending on your plan.

I have a roaming inclusion in my plan:

  • Some plans have roaming included to use in (subject to change)
  • Go to My Optus app or My Account to find out how much roaming data is included in your plan per month
  • Once your plan roaming inclusion is used, you can add an Optus $10 Roaming Pass (if eligible, see below for more information) or pay standard roaming rates. My Optus app will provide your roaming options, under Service → Add-ons → International Roaming

I don't have a roaming inclusion in my plan:

  • You can use Optus $10 Roaming Pass when travelling to an eligible Zone 1 destination (see below)

Optus $10 Roaming Pass is a service add-on that provides you with unlimited standard talk (Mobile Phone plans only) & SMS (excl. MMS) and 1GB of data per 24 hour period to use while travelling overseas in eligible Zone 1 destinations. To find out more, head to Optus $10 Roaming Pass.

Optus Choice Direct Debit plan: If you're on an Optus Choice Direct Debit plan, you'll be automatically opted into the Optus $10 Roaming Pass.

  • You'll need 'Real Money' / 'Credit' / 'Roaming data' / 'Extras Credit' / 'Travel Credit' to use Prepaid roaming overseas
  • Find out more about Prepaid roaming here

More information

Roaming settings can be managed in My Optus app. If you need help managing your roaming settings, head here.

Roaming charges can take a while to come through as they pass through different mobile networks. For this reason, the usage shown will only be an estimate.

Mobile services (excluding Prepaid)

You can check your usage in My Optus app and My Account. We have steps to help you.

Prepaid services

There are four options to check an estimate of your roaming usage:

  • My Optus app*
  • My Account*
  • Free SMS the word BAL to 9999
  • Free call 555 from your Optus mobile

*Data charges will apply if accessing from your phone while roaming.

You can also use your device to monitor usage information in real time, rather than relying on the alerts. See our Device Guides for device-specific instructions.

If you require assistance checking your usage while overseas you can call us on +61 2 8082 5678. This is free from an Optus Mobile plan.

Mobile services (excluding Prepaid)

You'll receive usage alerts by SMS or email as you use 50%, 85% and 100% of your plan's included roaming usage.

We'll also send you alerts for every $50 of excluded usage (usage outside of your plan inclusions) which includes pay as you go roaming charges or other excluded usage - such as international calls from Australia. Note. Doesn't apply to Optus Daily Roaming as usage types not included can't be used while roaming. See Optus Daily Roaming.

You can find more information on usage alerts here.

Note: While Optus sends data usage alerts, they don't show real time usage because of the delay in receiving information about data use from roaming partners. Rather than relying on the alerts, you can also use your device to monitor usage information in real time. See our Device Guides for device-specific instructions on viewing your usage.

Prepaid services

You'll receive usage alerts when there is 50%, 15% and 0% left of your inclusions to use while roaming.

Note: If you select to receive roaming alerts via email, you'll be sent a notification when connecting to the network in the destination you are roaming in, via email and SMS. Usage alerts indicating 50%, 15% & 0% remaining of your inclusions will be sent via email.

You can find more information on usage alerts here.

Aeromobile allows you to use mobile roaming with Optus whilst in-flight on applicable Partner Airlines only. Partner Airlines are subject to change without notice. You can check the latest Partner Airlines here. Roaming charges will apply only if airplane mode is switched off in your device settings.

Aeromobile roaming options will vary depending on your plan and where you're travelling to. You can check your plan via My Optus app. For help, see View your plan details.

When travelling:

  • Take note of any roaming usage alerts that we send to you. Note: Data usage alerts don't show real time usage because of the delay in receiving information about data use from roaming partners. Rather than relying on the alerts, you can also use your device to monitor usage information in real-time. See our Device Guides for device-specific instructions
  • Get the latest version of the My Optus app before you go to keep a tab on your usage, balance and bills when overseas
  • Consider adding a third party authority to your Optus account(s), so they can make enquiries on your behalf while you're travelling
