Understanding how your new Automatic Payment account works

If you've recently signed up or switched to our Automatic Payment plans and need more info on how your new billing or payments will work, we have you covered in this article.

For more details about the various plans and related FAQs, see Automatic Payment plans explained.

What's happening for you

  • You get a new Optus account and account number
  • Your payments will be automatically debited from the credit, debit or charge card you provided during the sign-up process
  • Your automatic payments will be taken upfront, on an earlier date to what you may be used to
  • You won't receive a monthly bill for this account, but will instead have a tax invoice issued when your payment is successfully processed
  • If you want to receive payment and tax invoice notifications, you'll need to set this up in My Optus app or My Account
  • You can manage / view your payments and tax invoices in My Optus app and My Account

The visual below outlines an example of a monthly payment schedule for a new Automatic Payment account where a customer's purchased a new device on a new plan:

Note:

  • You can make a manual payment any time before your automatic payment is due, using our Pay Online page. With manual payments, you can pay the full amount or make a partial payment. Any remaining balance will be charged on your payment cycle due date.
  • If you had an existing Optus plan with an associated device repayment and you changed your plan to an Automatic Payment plan with a new device, your associated device repayment will be brought across to your new account as a device payout and paid out over the next 3 months
  • If you did not purchase a new device, and just changed your existing Optus Choice plan with an associated device repayment to an Automatic Payment plan, your associated device repayment will be moved to your new account. Device repayments will cease once the device is fully paid.

Let's consider that you are an existing Optus customer receiving a bill with the issue date being the 1st of the month and the due date for payment is in 15 days.

When you change or get a new Automatic Payment plan, you will, for a certain time, have 2 accounts - either for a short transition period from one type of account to another, or for a longer period until your accounts are consolidated - your old account where you get a bill, and the new account that issues invoices.

For your new account, it'll be automatically paid at the start of your monthly payment cycle, which in this example will be the 1st of each month (previously the issue date of your bill).

*Existing Account: Bills issued with access fees in advance and usage for the month prior
#New Account: Automatic payments paid in advance of the access period

  • You'll continue to receive bills for any remaining service(s) on your old account. There's no change to your billing cycle or payment methods for these services
  • If there are no other existing active services on your old account, the account will be cancelled after the final bill has been paid
  • If you need access to the old bills (if the account has been cancelled), you can view them in My Account. You can access your bills for up to 3 months from the date your account was cancelled.

The visual below is an example of a monthly payment schedule for a customer with remaining service(s) on an old account, as well as service(s) on an Automatic Payment plan:

*Existing Account: Bills issued with access fees in advance and usage for the month prior
#New Account: Automatic payments paid in advance of the access period

Note:

  • You must opt-in to receive successful payment and tax invoice notifications for your new account. See Your tax invoice explained
  • You can consolidate your services to a single account (to help with a consistent payment experience and ensure you're on our latest plans) by contacting Optus
  • Each account (existing and new) gets paid separately, with payments for different services occurring on different dates - these are not double charges

If you only had one service on the existing account:
