If you're travelling overseas, we'll send you usage alerts for every $50 (ex GST) of estimated spend outside of your plan inclusions (which includes standard roaming rates and Optus Roaming Pass).
If you have international roaming data included in your plan or have Optus Roaming Pass enabled, we'll also send you alerts when you reach 50%, 85% and 100% of your included roaming data.
Note: If you're on an Optus Choice Plus, Optus Choice Plus Data, Optus Plus Family or Optus Plus Kids plan, you won't be able to use your service overseas currently. Please contact us here if you have any question.
Selecting how you want to receive service notifications
You can select or change your preferred method of receiving service notifications, including usage alerts, anytime by visiting My Account.
Tracking your usage
You can check your data usage in My Optus app or My Account.
Data charges for receiving service notifications and tracking your usage
If you choose to receive service notifications, including usage alerts via email, data charges may apply when you access and download the email notifications while roaming.
Data charges may also apply if you access My Optus app or My Account (to check your usage, for example) while roaming.
To minimise roaming charges, use Wi-Fi where possible.
If you require assistance checking your usage while overseas, you can call us 24/7 on +61 2 8082 5678. This is free if calling from your Optus mobile service.
Delays in data about usage
Usage data contained in usage alerts and displayed in My Optus app or My Account are not real time because there may delay in receiving usage information from roaming partners (delays of up to 48 hours may be experienced). For this reason, the usage shown will only be an estimate - your Optus bill will show the actual usage charges.
Rather than relying on the alerts and tools, you can also use your device to monitor usage information in real time. See our Device Guides for device-specific instructions on viewing your usage.
Note: If you use a large amount of data in a short period of time, you may receive several alerts simultaneously due to delays in processing roaming usage.
Optus Roaming Pass
If you have an Optus Roaming Pass, you'll receive notifications for all of the following events:
- You have turned on or off Optus Roaming Pass
- You have started an Optus Roaming Pass (pass is active and you have been charged)
- You have 50%, 85% and 100% usage of your Optus Roaming Pass 1GB data inclusion
If you have an active Optus Roaming Pass and exceed 24 hours or use 1GB of data (whichever comes first) and you continue to roam in an eligible destination, we'll automatically charge you another $10 pass and the 24-hour timer will reset. You'll receive usage alerts advising you of 50%, 85% and 100% usage of your additional pass.
If you're roaming outside of an eligible destination or have Optus Roaming Pass turned off, you'll be charged standard roaming rates. See above for how you can check and track your usage whilst travelling overseas.
Standard Roaming Rates
If you're roaming with standard roaming rates, you'll be charged for what you use as per the standard roaming rates in the destination you're traveling in. See above for how you can check and track your usage whilst travelling overseas.
Note: Significantly higher charges may apply. We recommend checking roaming rates and destinations before you travel.
Roaming inclusions in your plan
We'll send you alerts when you reach 50%, 85% and 100% of your included roaming data. If you exceed your included roaming data inclusions, you'll be charged as per your selection. If you have selected Optus Roaming Pass, you'll automatically be charged $10 for 1GB or 24 hours (whichever comes first) if you continue to roam in eligible destinations.
For all other destinations or if you have selected standard roaming rates, you'll be charged as per these rates. See above for how you can check and track your usage whilst travelling overseas.
Optus Travel Pack
If you're not yet eligible for Optus Roaming Pass and have purchased an Optus Travel Pack you'll receive alerts when you reach 50%, 85% and 100% of your included roaming data allowance.
If you exceed your Optus Travel Pack data inclusions, you'll be charged standard roaming rates. See above for how you can check and track your usage whilst travelling overseas.
Additional Information
If your account number starts with 1, 2, 8 or 9 you'll receive an alert for every estimated $100 spent on roaming usage.
Note: Eligible destinations are subject to change and you should check current eligible destinations before you travel.
