Mobile usage alerts

To help you keep track of your mobile and mobile broadband usage, we'll send free usage alerts via text or email.

You can monitor your data usage via My Optus App or My Account. Click here for more help with viewing your usage online.

You can also set up, customise or opt-out of usage alerts, by logging in to My Account.

Important:

If you're on an Optus Choice Direct Debit plan, please click here to see what happens now when you've reached your included allowance.

If you're on an Automatic Payment plan, please click here for more information on what happens when you've reached your included allowance.

If you're unsure about what plan you're on, visit My Optus app or My Account. Otherwise, head to our article for more info.

Optus usage alerts for your mobile plan help you keep on top of your included talk and data usage each month. You're automatically sent usage alerts whenever you've reached:

  • 50%, 85% and 100% of your monthly plan inclusions

You can also check your data usage in My Optus App or My Account.

It's important to keep in mind that these usage alerts don't include calls and messages that aren't part of your plan inclusions.

We'll also send you an alert once you've reached $50 (ex GST) on services not included in your plan like talk/text and data usage outside of Australia (international roaming), 3rd Party Content (Premium SMS & Direct Carrier Billing) or international calls to overseas from Australia that aren't included in your plan.

Note: Usage data contained in usage alerts and displayed in My Optus app or My Account are not real time and there may be delays of 4 to 48 hours. It's recommended you do not rely solely on them.

If your account has at least one eligible plan, you may already be opted-into Endless Data

Eligible plans include Optus Choice, Optus Families & Kids, Optus One, Optus Choice Data and Optus Choice Connected Watch plans. Also, Optus Choice Plus, Optus Choice Plus Data, Optus Plus Family, Optus Plus Kids Plan or Optus Choice Direct Debit plan.

This means that once your account has reached the limits of your shared data allowance, all eligible services on your account will continue to use data at maximum speeds of up to 1.5Mbps with no excess data charges in Australia.

Head here to find out more about Endless Data.

If you want to return to full data speed after exceeding your shared data allowance if eligible, you can add extra data to your account or an Unlimited Data Day via My Optus app or My Account.

Alternatively, if your account is not opted into Endless Data, your default excess data option will be set to the Automatic 1GB for $10. This means you'll automatically receive an additional 1GB for $10 when you have reached the limits of your shared data allowance.

To view your plan's inclusions and applicable charges, check out your Critical Information Summary (CIS).

Customers on other mobile plans

You'll be charged your plan's regular rates. To find out what they are, check out your Critical Information Summary (CIS).

Note: Check your bill for your plan's exact name (or ID number) so you can find the relevant CIS on the CIS page.

If you're travelling overseas, we'll send you usage alerts for every $50 (ex GST) of estimated spend outside of your plan inclusions (which includes standard roaming rates and Optus Roaming Pass).

If you have international roaming data included in your plan or have Optus Roaming Pass enabled, we'll also send you alerts when you reach 50%, 85% and 100% of your included roaming data.

Note: If you're on an Optus Choice Plus, Optus Choice Plus Data, Optus Plus Family or Optus Plus Kids plan, you won't be able to use your service overseas currently. Please contact us here if you have any question.

Selecting how you want to receive service notifications

You can select or change your preferred method of receiving service notifications, including usage alerts, anytime by visiting My Account.

Tracking your usage

You can check your data usage in My Optus app or My Account.

Data charges for receiving service notifications and tracking your usage

If you choose to receive service notifications, including usage alerts via email, data charges may apply when you access and download the email notifications while roaming.

Data charges may also apply if you access My Optus app or My Account (to check your usage, for example) while roaming.

To minimise roaming charges, use Wi-Fi where possible.

If you require assistance checking your usage while overseas, you can call us 24/7 on +61 2 8082 5678. This is free if calling from your Optus mobile service.

Delays in data about usage

Usage data contained in usage alerts and displayed in My Optus app or My Account are not real time because there may delay in receiving usage information from roaming partners (delays of up to 48 hours may be experienced). For this reason, the usage shown will only be an estimate - your Optus bill will show the actual usage charges.

Rather than relying on the alerts and tools, you can also use your device to monitor usage information in real time. See our Device Guides for device-specific instructions on viewing your usage.

Note: If you use a large amount of data in a short period of time, you may receive several alerts simultaneously due to delays in processing roaming usage.

Optus Roaming Pass

If you have an Optus Roaming Pass, you'll receive notifications for all of the following events:

  • You have turned on or off Optus Roaming Pass
  • You have started an Optus Roaming Pass (pass is active and you have been charged)
  • You have 50%, 85% and 100% usage of your Optus Roaming Pass 1GB data inclusion

If you have an active Optus Roaming Pass and exceed 24 hours or use 1GB of data (whichever comes first) and you continue to roam in an eligible destination, we'll automatically charge you another $10 pass and the 24-hour timer will reset. You'll receive usage alerts advising you of 50%, 85% and 100% usage of your additional pass.

If you're roaming outside of an eligible destination or have Optus Roaming Pass turned off, you'll be charged standard roaming rates. See above for how you can check and track your usage whilst travelling overseas.

Standard Roaming Rates

If you're roaming with standard roaming rates, you'll be charged for what you use as per the standard roaming rates in the destination you're traveling in. See above for how you can check and track your usage whilst travelling overseas.

Note: Significantly higher charges may apply. We recommend checking roaming rates and destinations before you travel.

Roaming inclusions in your plan

We'll send you alerts when you reach 50%, 85% and 100% of your included roaming data. If you exceed your included roaming data inclusions, you'll be charged as per your selection. If you have selected Optus Roaming Pass, you'll automatically be charged $10 for 1GB or 24 hours (whichever comes first) if you continue to roam in eligible destinations.

For all other destinations or if you have selected standard roaming rates, you'll be charged as per these rates. See above for how you can check and track your usage whilst travelling overseas.

Optus Travel Pack

If you're not yet eligible for Optus Roaming Pass and have purchased an Optus Travel Pack you'll receive alerts when you reach 50%, 85% and 100% of your included roaming data allowance.

If you exceed your Optus Travel Pack data inclusions, you'll be charged standard roaming rates. See above for how you can check and track your usage whilst travelling overseas.

Additional Information

If your account number starts with 1, 2, 8 or 9 you'll receive an alert for every estimated $100 spent on roaming usage.

Note: Eligible destinations are subject to change and you should check current eligible destinations before you travel.

We'll send you an alert via SMS to give you a heads up about how you're tracking. We'll let you know if you're running low on credit, and on My Prepaid Daily and My Prepaid Daily Plus we'll also let you know if we've bumped you up for the day.

Usage alerts are triggered at different intervals and are sent in real time in most cases, although delays may occur from time to time (e.g. if there was an outage).

You are not able to opt out of usage alerts.

You can also check your Prepaid usage and/or spend in real time via:

  • My Optus app*
  • My Account*
  • Free SMS the word BAL to 9999
  • Free call 555 from your Optus mobile service

*Note: Data charges will apply if accessing and downloading email notifications and alerts or accessing My Optus app or My Account from your mobile phone or device while roaming. To minimise roaming charges, use Wi-Fi where possible.

Low balance warning message

Unfortunately, you cannot opt-out from the low balance warning message. You can however, set up AutoRecharge so your service is topped up once the account reaches the low balance level. You'll be notified each time an auto recharge occurs.

Travelling overseas

If you're using your service overseas, we'll send you usage alerts when there is 50%, 15% and 0% left of your inclusions.

You can update your preferred method of receiving roaming notifications (including roaming usage alerts) by visiting My Account. If you choose to receive your roaming alerts and notifications by email, data charges may apply for accessing those email notifications and alerts. To minimise roaming charges, use Wi-Fi where possible.

Note: If you select to receive roaming alerts via email, we will send:

  • a notification when connecting to the network in the destination where you are roaming via email;

  • usage alerts indicating 50%, 15% & 0% remaining of your inclusions via both email and SMS

If you require assistance checking your usage while overseas you can call us 24/7 on +61 2 8082 5678. This is free from an Optus mobile plan. The data is real time in most cases, although delays may occur from time to time (e.g. if there was an outage).

Business customer with more than six services? Get in touch with your Account Executive to manage your alerts.

If you have multiple services that data share on the same account, you may receive multiple usage notifications when you use 50%, 85% or 100% of your included value.

You can mute these alerts by following the steps below:

  • Log into My Account
    • If the customer has multiple billing accounts:
      • Click Switch account
      • Select the relevant account from the pop-up display
  • Select the service you wish to mute
  • Click Settings
  • Click Show all settings on the bottom
  • Click Service notifications
  • Untick Alert me
  • Click Save
